Derian News, Notices 0

Dear Derian House Colleagues,

It feels like February passed in the blink of an eye with multitudes of storms and the ever changing COVID situation, alongside this we have the sad situation in Eastern Europe. I am sure you join me in hoping the situation resolves itself in Ukraine and our thoughts go to the people of that country.

With all of this going on we are still committed to delivering the amazing Derian House care to our families and we continue to receive amazing feedback. Everyone across the charity has their part to play in ensuring we deliver that outstanding care, work in a great environment, support our finances and income, keep everyone safe and look after each other as one Derian Team.

As restrictions continue to ease outside of Derian it is important to remember that as a healthcare provider we are still maintaining our current procedures. We have received clear instructions from NHS Test and Trace to maintain our COVID-Secure, testing and visitor policies so please support us in this area. As I said in January we do continue to review these monthly at the Senior Management Team meeting and this approach will continue until the end of March when we will see what rules apply. I remain aware of the limited seating in Danni’s Diner and thank everyone for the continued support in maintaining the seating rules.

I intend to do the Keeping in Touch sessions face to face after the Trustees Board meeting at the end of March so for this month below are some February highlights  :-

  • We have a number of new starters in February across many areas of Derian, check out the Intranet to see who they are and if you see them around the hospice please say hello.
  • Family Support and Wellbeing continues to be vital as families cope with the ongoing pandemic and it is great to see lots of activities happening, on the last day of the month we also welcomed our new Counsellor, John to Derian.
  • Within the Hospice occupancy keeps moving dynamically as we manage cancellation and rebooking’s, it is however great to see lots of children and young people (old and new) staying with us and receiving outstanding care from our amazing team.
  • Our Derian at Home Team and ACP colleagues have been extremely busy in February with sadly a number of RIP’s and other challenging demands and I thank them for their resilience and professionalism.
  • The facilities at Derian are large and complex to manage and maintain and the Housekeeping and Estates team have done a brilliant job to keeping everything looking amazing.
  • Culture and Values sessions are still on our agenda and Lynn, Ben and I will be schedule 3-4 final sessions in March, if you haven’t been on one yet then watch this space for an invite.
  • Finances are always challenging however, fundraising, marketing and communications teams beat our January budget figure so well done everyone. We have also had great news about an increase in our Children’s Hospice Grant for 2022/23 alongside some exciting applications for grants (more to come on that in the coming months)
  • Events are back on schedule for 2022, take a look at our website for upcoming plans or speak to the Fundraising Team for more information.
  • In 2022 the world of CCG’s (clinical commissioning groups) will be changing, this is a massive shake up of the system and Lynn and I are heavily involved in discussions across Lancashire, South Cumbria and Greater Manchester. We have quite a way to go but we are positive about the engagement so far and also pleased with the recognition of Derian House and the respect it has within the health and social care sector within the region.
  • EMIS project is progressing, we have now served notice to Crosscare which will switch off in early June, any questions about this activity please speak to Ruth, Ben, Kirsty or Kelly.
  • Keepsake Circle the bereaved family song writing scheme will continue in 2022, families have been contacted and we hope to allocate places at the beginning of March through to the end of 2023.
  • Our shops continue to be the face of the charity on the high street with new stores in Accrington and Bury planned within the next few months. We have a new Manager and Assistant Manager in Preston from March and we wish them well. Our Derian Drivers have been doing a brilliant job keeping stock moving and every store is gearing for a busy Spring and Summer.

Around and About the Hospice (and beyond)

  • Reflection Garden, a couple of final elements to be added with two canopies over benches and new pathway covering, the water features are working and once the planting matures it will be amazing.
  • Woodland Suite, this facility is now re-open after being closed whilst we completed the Reflection Garden.
  • Derian on Holiday, both sites re-opened in the middle of February with their first week being half-term and all 4 lodges full, I believe we have a few weeks left so please tell families if they haven’t already booked.
  • Open Gardens, Our next National Garden Scheme Open Gardens will be on the 3rd April 2022, this was extremely successful in 2021 so please share the date with any family and friends, tickets are available for the NGS website.
  • Sensory Garden, The new sails are now installed and I am sure you agree look very colourful, we have made the garden usable again for the Spring and Summer with a full refurbishment happening from September, once we have the plans finally agreed we will share these with you.

As you can see we continue to be really busy.

Thank you all for your support and commitment and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me, any member of the senior team or your line manager.

David

Gender discrimination is unequal or disadvantageous treatment of an individual or group of individuals based on gender. Gender discrimination is one of the areas covered by the 2010 Equality Act which includes legislation against many forms of discrimination. Gender discrimination can be direct or indirect. It can also take the form of victimisation or harassment.

Gender discrimination does not need to be deliberate. Someone may be discriminating against you without realising it or meaning to, but this might still count as discrimination. The law against gender discrimination does not allow positive discrimination in favour of one sex. For example, an employer is not allowed to insist on only recruiting or promoting women to a particular job because women have previously been discriminated against when applying for that role.

So how do we ensure we do not discriminate against Gender?

It is illegal for Derian House to discriminate against you because of your gender. Areas of employment where gender discrimination may typically occur are:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Promotion
  • Pay and benefits
  • Redundancy and dismissal
  • Terms and conditions of work

Recruitment and selection – Derian House is committed to ensure that neither Gender based discrimination or gender bias takes place in any practice including Recruitment and Selection. When recruiting a new role, we are strict to ensure that adverts remain accessible and are written in a gender neutral manner. We also ensure that all shortlisting activities and interviews are held with a heavily structured process to ensure all candidates are provided with equal opportunity.

Promotion – When deciding which staff are eligible for promotion the main issue to avoid is unconscious bias from the line manager. Therefore, in all promotion situations there is a discussion around suitability and performance in order to lower the risk of unfair evaluation. This joint discussion maybe between the line manager, HR, the CEO or the Board of Trustees.

Pay and benefits – The Equal Pay Act 1970 gives you the right to be treated equally in terms of pay in comparison to a member of the opposite sex. At Derian House we have a rigid salary evaluation process which is benchmarked by an external company. Our roles are benchmarked by the associated job description and therefore the pay and benefit package an individual receives is dictated by their position.

Redundancy and dismissal – In order to move ahead with fair Redundancy and dismissal there are a number of factors that have to be considered. Whenever an individual or pool of people are selected for risk of redundancy we always ensure we follow the ACAS code of practice. In instances of dismissal we have strict policies in place to ensure that all staff regardless of gender are subject to the same process.

Terms and conditions of work – At Derian House we have a set of contractual terms and conditions which are split into the following categories; Care team, Retail, Intern, Office and management and Facilities. These terms are in line with all legislation and written by the organisational employment lawyers. Terms and Conditions of staff are therefore driven by your department rather than any personal circumstance and do not vary per individual.

I’m sure you will all by now be aware of the government’s plans for ‘Living with Covid’ as we move forward during the next few months.

However, the guidance that has been issued so far does not apply to healthcare settings although we are expecting updates at some stage over the next couple of weeks. Therefore, with the support of David, the SMT and Senior Care Team it has been agreed that all current COVID policies and procedures  at Derian will remain in place until at least the 31st March. This will give us the opportunity to carefully review the new guidance issued and plan the effective implementation of any changes that we are able to make.

I don’t think any of us ever thought that we’d be living and working with such restrictions  for 2 years and I can’t thank everyone enough for their understanding and support through this challenging time, we are nearly through this now  but I do want to reassure you that the decisions we make to lift restrictions when we can will be taken in the best interests of the children, young people and their families as well as all our team.

If you have any questions or want to discuss anything further then please just ask either myself or any of the senior team.

Kind Regards

Lynn

Director of Clinical Services

Derian News, Notices 0

Dear Derian House Colleagues,

Writing this on the last day of January allows me to reflect on the start of the year, the challenges we have all faced with the continuing COVID rules and how this impacts on our daily lives. It has been a difficult month, January always feels a long and dark month and as we move in to February we can look forward to lighter evenings and plan for Spring and Summer.

As restrictions ease outside of Derian it is important to remember that as a health care provider we are still maintaining our COVID-Secure procedures. These are reviewed each month at the Senior Management Team meeting and feel that continuing to maintain  this approach until the end of March when we understand that many health care setting restrictions will be eased. I am very aware of the limited seating in Danni’s Diner and thank everyone for the continued support in maintaining the seating rules, we have managed for nearly two years and I am hopeful within a short number of months we can increase capacity and alongside these rules we also continue to apply the face mask and social distancing guidance.

I was hoping to do the Keeping in Touch sessions face to face at the start of the year however, restrictions stopped that happening, I do hope we can move back to those larger group sessions very soon. Below are some key items to keep you up to date with what is happening at the moment  :-

  • The Hospice continues to get busier and as we welcome Ruth as our new Hospice Manager I know she is keen to ensure this continues, I would also formally like to welcome Ruth and our other new starters to the Derian family.
  • Our Derian at Home colleagues continue to be busy supporting families across the region, winter is always a difficult time and our team provide so much support to families which we know is highly valued.
  • We are continuing to increase services within Family Support and Wellbeing and it is great to see activities happening across Derian and beyond.
  • We have also seen quite a few new staff commence in January in both the clinical and non-clinical areas, please pop on to the Intranet to check them out, if you see new faces around the Hospice please say hello and welcome them to the team.
  • We saw almost 70 team members attend the Culture and Values sessions in the last couple of months of 2021, we hope to continue these sessions again in February to make sure as many people as possible can be part of Year 4.
  • The financial situation in 2021 was challenging however, through the excellent work of our fundraising, marketing and communications teams we beat our revised budget. Although we had a deficit in 2021 we were ahead of what we planned to achieve and I thank everyone involved in every aspect of our income for their support and hard work.
  • We have lots planned for raising funds in 2022, all our events are back on and we will share these with you shortly. If you want to get involved in fundraising then please pop and see one of the fundraising team.
  • Our campaigns have been very successful with the latest telling Isabelle’s Story raising huge amounts. The work to manage these campaigns is massive so thanks to finance (for processing hundreds of donations), marketing and fundraising and of course thank you to Isabelle’s Dad who shared his words and feelings.
  • In 2022 the world of CCG’s (clinical commissioning groups) will be changing, this is a massive shake up of the system and Lynn and I are heavily involved in discussions across Lancashire, South Cumbria and Greater Manchester We have quite a way to go but we are positive about the engagement so far and also pleased with the recognition of Derian House and the respect it has within the health and social care sector within the region.
  • EMIS project continues and I will ensure we send a more detailed update to everyone very soon.
  • Julie Atherton Professional Development Grant applications closed in early December and we were delighted with the response. Successful applicants should have been contacted and many congratulations to those who were successful. The grant programme will open again for applications in September 2022 so please discuss with your Line Manager if you have any areas of interest.
  • Our shops had a successful Christmas trading period and we are now focused on growing our current stores and opening new stores in Accrington and Bury within the next few months.

Around and About the Hospice (and beyond)

  • Reflection Garden, it is almost finished and I hope you have had chance to pass by and take a quick look. There are still some additional works to be done (canopy covers over two of the benches) and we have to wait a little while for the cement to dry before we can add water to the ponds, we hope this will be in about three weeks’ time. HSBC are coming in this week to help clean and replace the pebbles around the pools and we also have some of the bereaved family group coming in this week to take a look.
  • Woodland Suite, this facility is now re-open after being closed whilst we completed the Reflection Garden, we have a few finishing off items of furniture to complete the furnishings but the room is available to book and be used.
  • Derian on Holiday, both Ribby Hall and South Lakeland are closed for their annual check and refresh (this happens every year), we will be re-open again in the middle of February offering our Derian families a week’s holiday. If you have not seen these lodges then now is the time to visit as once we re-open we are usually fully booked and it is more difficult to view, if you are interested in visiting please speak to your line manager who can escalate to Luke and myself.
  • EV Charging , after a number of delays in setting up the financial side of the machines we are hopeful these will be working at some point in February, Luke will send a message when this happens.

As you can see we have had a busy time and we have great plans for 2022.

Thank you all for your support and commitment and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me, any member of the senior team or your line manager.

David

We appeared on ITV Granada Reports last night, where our recently turned one-year-old superstar Freddie help officially break the ground on the Great Big House Giveaway plot at Green Hills, Blackburn.
The ceremony took place yesterday at the award-winning housing development, and officially marked the start of work on the £250,000 property which will be won in September this year.
Freddie’s parents Kari and Sam were thrilled to be able to join in the momentous occasion, and have even bought tickets to the draw themselves!

Within the December temperature check we saw improvements in a number of areas as well as decreases in others. As you will note from the grid, this is common movements but does allow us to reflect on areas that we may need specific focus or discussion. Unfortunately participation has declined and sadly does provide a representative view of all staff and therefore hope that those that did not manage to participate in this survey will in the June Birdsong.

Review of verbatim comments

Of the 63 respondents 86% believe that since the Birdsong survey effective communication had increased.

We are pleased that the majority feel the communication has improved the senior team are focussed on ensuring that this continues. Please help us by feeding back any other methods of communication that would help you understand what’s happening at Derian.

Summarised points

Participation

The 45% participation figure is disappointing across the organisation. Whilst retail has seen significant improvements, commercial has remained static with reasonable participation and we would like to the participation of our care Team improve dramatically as we saw just 35% which does not give us a true reflection of this vitally important section of our workforce.

Decrease in Trustee and SMT confidence

Confidence in Trustees and Senior Management both decreased. Whilst disappointing we are mindful that we are operating the charity in the ongoing pandemic and cannot always deliver messages that are well received. Both the Trustees and SMT members are committed to providing the upmost support to everyone and if any of feel reduced confidence in us please share your views in order to understand why things happen and support you through these ever changing times. We are delighted that Ruth Islip has now joined us a Hospice Manager and working alongside Dawn and Clare we are confident we have a strong, knowledgeable and effective leadership team working with Lynn and the rest of the Senior Team.

Communication

The increased scores and feedback surrounding communication are excellent. We have noted a verbatim comment about the methods of communication we have utilised throughout the pandemic and the appropriate manager has been made aware of this and is taking steps to ensure everyone is familiar with this method and understand why it is being used.

Derian News, Notices 0

Earlier last week, we welcomed five brand new members to the team here at Derian House. You may have already met them, but get to know them more by scrolling down, and don’t forget to introduce yourselves if you haven’t already.

Ruth Islip – Hospice Manager

Ruth has joined us as Hospice Manager from her previous job at Manchester Children’s Hospital. She spent the majority of her 16 years there as a Ward Nurse, with her transitioning to Clinical Coordinator in her final twelve months.

In years previous, Ruth has actually done bank shifts here at the hospice, and even said to her husband four weeks before the position went live on our website that her dream job would be Hospice Manager at Derian House – now look at her!

As well as being a nurse, Ruth has a love of leadership, and having lived through many families’ experiences of end of life care, has a passion for delivering the best care possible with the team. She’s looking forward to giving our families the best experience possible, and creating a sense of excitement for those who may have previously been apprehensive about using our services. Coming out of the pandemic, Ruth is passionate about working together with all of the teams within Derian House to implement positive changes and raise awareness.

When she’s not at work, Ruth is Mum to Libby (12), Holly (9) and Toby (5), and is actively involved in church where she sings as part of a huge band! She loves being active (even though her husband would disagree!), and enjoys going away on holiday as much as possible.

Samantha Fisher – Derian at Home Nurse

Our newest Derian at Home Nurse, Samantha, has also joined us from Manchester Children’s, where she worked for three years after qualifying. Sam cared for acutely ill children in the Brain Tumour Centre, and particularly enjoyed looking after children with complex needs to make their experiences as comfortable as possible.

Sam made the move to Derian House as she wanted to spend more time with children and their families rather than continue with the ‘in and out of the door’ nature of a hospital setting. She’s really looking forward to getting out into the community and providing nursing care to the children and young people on our Derian at Home books.

In her spare time, Sam enjoys long walks with Stanley the dog, going out for tea and meeting up with friends. She’s also recently trained in acupuncture which is a service she delivers to friends and family at home. Get in her good books and she’ll give you a demo!

Lisa Akgunduz – Registered Nurse

Lisa is no stranger to Derian House – she actually worked here for five years and left in 2006! Throughout her career since, nothing has compared to the work she did here at the hospice, and lots of her nursing memories come from here… so she’s back for Round #2!

Since finishing at Derian, she’s done everything from bank work, agency work, oncology, palliative care, and chemotherapy. After working through the pandemic on COVID-19 wards, Lisa was ready to get back to giving full care with children and young people who have complex needs, so her local children’s hospice seemed like the perfect option.

Outside of work, Lisa is Mum to two kids and Arlo the beagle. She’s a self-proclaimed daredevil and has even abseiled down Old Trafford, as well as landing a plane! (Not physically, but still…! This is definitely a story to speak to her about in person!)

Emma Smith – Registered Nurse

Emma is the second of our two new nurses, and has joined us at Derian after previously working in an agency role. She’s spent the majority of her nursing career in adult nursing, but also has pediatric experience.

Living in Chorley and working in Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester was proving too much travel-wise, and Lisa wanted to be more hands-on with her work, which is a huge part of the reason she made the transition to Derian House. She is a huge fan of the facilities here at the hospice, and cannot wait to get in the pool!

When she’s not Emma the nurse, she’s Emma the mum to three children aged 10, 12 and 15, and Socks the dog! She ‘lives for the day’ and absolutely loves doing a range of outdoor activities with her brood that include ziplining, canoeing and kayaking.

Becca Feeley – PR & Communications Officer

Becca is the final piece in the Comms & Marketing jigsaw, joining us from Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust as our PR & Communications Officer. This exciting role will see her write press releases and work with Derian families on our marketing campaigns.

Becca has worked in Comms for nearly four years, and after seeing the incredible work that Derian House does with families and their children, she knew that she wanted to be a part of it. She’s looking forward to getting to know as many people as possible and doing what she loves best – writing!

In her spare time, Becca enjoys being by the sea, getting tangled up in yoga, and reading lots of books. Fun fact – Becca can do a booming death metal voice, which is niche but comes in handy when she’s asked to perform her party trick!

Derian News, Notices 0

We welcomed five new starters at Derian House on Monday, but before we get to know them later in the week, we’ve been waiting on our two new Derian at Home ladies to start on team before their glamourous photoshoot, hence the lateness of this article… a lot of you have probably already got to know our fab four, but here’s a bit more about them for those further afield.

Olivia Monks – Clinical Administrator

Our new Clinical Administrator, Olivia, has spent a lot of her working life so far in the travel industry. After finishing college, she worked at Ribby Hall Holidays for two years, before getting work on Australian and New Zealand cruise ships where she had a front of house role.

Unfortunately, her time at sea was cut short due to a word beginning with C and rhyming with Novid (fun fact – Olivia had to isolate on her own for FIVE WEEKS at sea at the beginning of Lockdown #1), and returned to the UK where she had numerous ‘bit’ jobs before joining us here at Derian.

After discovering that she had some health problems of her own, Olivia really wanted a job somewhere where she could help others and making a difference. Alongside her new job, she’s also taken on an evening Counselling course to help with her communications with families.

Outside of work, Olivia enjoys working out, eating healthily, shopping, travelling and experiencing new cultures. She also exclaimed ‘I love a good night out!’. We’re sure she’ll fit right in here!

Nichola Roughley – Clinical Support Worker

Nichola has joined us from Mayfield School in Chorley, where she worked for a whopping 36 years. After her grandson Billy passed away at Derian last March, it inspired Nichola to make a positive change and work with children and young people who have life-limiting conditions.

Whilst in her previous role, Nichola spent the evenings volunteering at Linkability, a charity which helps adults who have learning difficulties, so her varied experience will certainly help in her new job at Derian House.

In her spare time, Nichola enjoys walking her two dogs Barney and George and being Grandma to her three grandchildren.

Fun fact – Nic was once in an adult cheerleading team that won the British Championships!

Danni Fielding – Derian at Home Clinical Support Worker

The first of our two new community support workers is Danni, who has joined us after working at Burnley NICU for the past five years. Danni has a nursery nurse background, and has always had an interest in working with children and young people who are palliative as she wants to help make happy memories for them in their short lives.

Danni is most looking forward to meeting the team, getting out and about, and working with our families and their children.

When she’s not at work, Danni enjoys family days out with her husband, their three children and two dogs.

Emily Heaton – Derian at Home Clinical Support Worker

Emily worked at Pendle View Primary School in her hometown of Colne for four years before making the move to Derian. It’s been 11 years since she left college, and Emily wanted a role where she could really make a difference and be involved in making special memories for children who have life-limiting conditions.

Her own son actually has medical needs, which pushed our new Derian at Home team member to wanting the job at Derian House even more. She’s really looking forward to meeting the families we care for and helping them on their individual journeys.

Outside of work, Emily absolutely loves random days out with her family. She’s a big adrenaline-junkie, so their days are always packed with a thrill!

Fun fact – Emily owns a whopping 60 pairs of trainers, to which she says the secret is buying them in kids sizes… they’re much cheaper!

New Starter 0

It’s that time of year again, as soon as Christmas is over and the New Year has begun, we start to look at making New Year’s resolutions. Here’s why your resolution for 2022 should be to Make a Will…

It might not help you to lose weight, or conquer the half marathon you’ve been talking about for years, but writing a Will is a good way to provide for the future of the loved ones that you have spent time with at Christmas, and support Derian House.

Did you know? Gifts in Wills fund the care of 1 in 5 of our children and young people.

Make A Will Month is an opportunity for us to promote our partnerships with Will writing services as well as starting a conversation with our supporters about the impact of leaving a gift in their Will to Derian House.

Many people consider talking about Wills to be a sad topic as they associate it with dying, but actually writing a Will is encouraged when any important life event occurs for example getting married, buying a house or having a new baby.

Writing a Will should be viewed as an uplifting experience as you are planning for the future, taking care of your loved ones and it’s a wonderful way to support a charity too, leaving behind a legacy.

When we consider our donor journey, a supporter might first become involved with Derian House doing a sponsored run or challenge event, but then go on to donate regularly. By promoting gifts in Wills we hope that when the time is right for them to remember a charity in their Will we will be at the forefront of their mind.

If you have any questions about how to get started with writing your Will or you want to know more about leaving a gift in your Will to Derian House, please email gillian.rabbett@derianhouse.co.uk
