Good Morning all,

We are happy to say we are able to wear our Christmas t shirts/jumpers as of 1st of December. For those delivering care please continue to adhere to IPC bare below the elbow so t shirts only.

We will be starting to put the Christmas trees up from the 30th November, this often takes some time so if anyone is available Monday 3rd December to support the finishing touches that would be greatly appreciated.

The Children and young people’s Christmas parties will be taking place Saturday 9th December and lots of festive fun is planned for the month of December.

Kind regards,

Hello Team Derian

Welcome to the 1st edition of my weekly e-update….. a brief email which I’ll send out personally each Friday to keep everyone up to date on relevant hospice wide matters.  You’ll be pleased to know that it won’t be war and peace, just a few paragraphs of useful information to keep you in the loop.

So…here’s this week’s news….

  1. I’ve completed three staff briefings over the last week – they’ve been really well attended and very participative, so thank you to everyone who has managed to get along to one of the dates.  Thanks also for everyone’s honest contribution – that’s really welcome and appreciated.  For those of you who have managed to escape the briefing so far, fear not, I’ll be sending a brief video version of the presentation so that everyone receives the same message.
  2. As you all know, Luke will be leaving us in a couple of months, progressing to a great opportunity in Facilities Management.  We have been busy behind the scenes searching for his successor and I am delighted to share that John Boe will join us on Monday 20th November, enabling a really great handover between Luke and John.
  3. We are currently advertising for a Catering Manager, we’re looking for someone who can be really flexible, working a varied shift pattern and who can help shape our catering offer going forward to align with our plans for increased activity across the hospice.
  4. Christmas has arrived at the hospice, it’s been lovely to see the daily additions of decorations, lights, snowmen etc etc…. Christmas is absolutely welcome at Derian in November!  My tree at home is going up next week…. Am I the first ????
  5. Kim and I are currently interviewing for the new Head of Governance and Compliance role – fingers crossed we find the right fit for Derian and get them in post quickly.  This is probably are biggest risk area at the moment.
  6. Catherine has the final part of her application process for Registered Manager status with the CQC in December, and so hopefully we’ll complete that then.  It’s been a fairly long process so far, but with myself as Responsible Individual we are fully covered until the application process concludes.
  7. The Say My Child’s Name has to be one of most significant campaigns that we have ever run.  Congratulations to everyone involved.  70 bereaved families have taken part in the research which is just amazing.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to have a look at this please see the attached research document, or here’s the practical “how to speak to bereaved parents” guide for friends and family: derianhouse.co.uk/bereavement and here’s a link to the video: Say My Child’s Name – YouTube.

That’s about it for now, have a great weekend everyone whatever you are doing…

Best wishes

Karen

Good Morning,

Please can I just make you aware that we have no catering on site this weekend (18th/19th November) and the weekend of the 2nd/3rd December. With this is mind, please can you bring your own food. Please can I also ask that you make sure you wash your own dishes in order that we don’t have a build-up of plates/ cutlery over the weekend.

We will ensure we have food options available for our BCYPs and families over both weekends.

Many Thanks,

Kind regards,

Good afternoon

Storm Debi appears to be getting stronger as the day goes on. Please can I request all staff do not use the Woodland Walk or the path to our gardens from the Lodge Driveway as a precaution from falling branches. Please take extra care when in all other external areas

Hi everyone,

I know that parking is an issue on site and sometimes we have to block people in as it is the only way we can park but please if you have to do this can you let Reception know as they have a list of registration numbers so they can inform the person.

If it is after hours and there is no one on Reception please make every effort to find out who you have blocked in so that cars can be moved.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part in the open day 30th anniversary celebrations on Friday.

It was such a brilliant and uplifting day and I hope you all feel proud of being able to showcase the wonderful work we do here at Derian to members of the public and supporters.

A special well done to Gill, Ellie and Ann-Marie who co-ordinated the day, and also to all of the representatives on the 30th anniversary group who have been working hard for a number of months on the plans for the open day event.

Whilst it will be difficult to measure the real impact of the open day (I’m sure it will spark many different opportunities for years to come), we have had some lovely outcomes and feedback that I wanted to share with you all.

  • 102 people attended on the day.
  • We received £3,133 in web donations and donations on the day – including two £1,000 donations and four new regular monthly givers signed up.
  • We sold almost £400 worth of Derian goods on reception and another £80 in extra donations.
  • We received excellent press coverage, with reports on BBC North West Tonight (https://tinyurl.com/3ne4jssx); ITV Granada Reports (Derian House Children’s Hospice celebrates 30th birthday | ITV News Granada); we were the top story on BBC Radio Lancashire and the Lancashire Post will be running a photo spread about the day.
  • A number of visitors pledged to leave a legacy to Derian House in their Wills.
  • Two large businesses have contacted us offering to help with volunteering and donations after seeing us on the news.

We have also received some lovely comments from visitors – here’s just a few…

“Wonderful place, for all our young people.” Amanda Parker JP, Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.

“An amazing experience. I wish I could bottle the passion, enthusiasm, compassion and kindness that oozes throughout the whole building. The visit should be a must for every front line practitioner. Justin S, Lancashire Police.

“Happy birthday to all staff, volunteers, parents, families and children. Thank you for a special day.” Sam Sherrington, NHS England.

“Once again thank you for your kind invitation for Val and I to visit Derian House and be part of its 30th celebration. We both enjoyed our time with you and it was good to see old colleagues and meet new people, clearly the hospice is developing apace. The tour was both interesting and informative and along with the  hospitality and warm welcome made for and a truly special day. Finally the gold badge and the words inside the card were greatly appreciated.

Please pass on thanks to all concerned.” Trevor Briggs (Derian’s first Chief Executive)

This week is Baby Loss Awareness Week – a time for thousands of parents, families and friends to unite and commemorate babies’ lives who were too short ✨
As darkness falls each night over the next seven days, pink and blue lights will illuminate Derian House’s hospice building, as we join organisations around the world in remembering and commemorating much-loved and missed babies
The suggestion came from bereaved parents Kirsty and Jonathon Prescott, whose daughter Iris Joy laid to rest at Derian House in 2021
To honour every little life lost, we stand together with thousands of people around the world to light a candle or share an image of a candle at 7pm on Sunday 15th October
This sends a ‘Wave of Light’ across the world, as we remember babies who were too precious for this earth

In light of the recent Lucy Letby case we want to ensure that all staff are aware of the avenues available to them should they wish to raise a concern or speak up.

As part of our commitment to ensuring the safety of everyone who comes into Derian House, we have identified a number of people, our “raising concern champions”, who you can go to if you need to raise a concern. This could be about safety, the care of a patient or our culture.

You can go to ANY trustee, or ANY of the senior management team.

You can also speak to raising concern champions Helen Holmes or Katie McNally.

If you feel that you would like to speak to someone independent, we have appointed an external organisation called Safecall, which specialises in managing whistleblower concerns. Safecall’s hotline enables you to report your concern relating to your working environment in a safe and secure way, either by phone or online (www.safecall.co.uk/report or www.safecall.co.uk/freephone).

Here you can also watch a short film produced by the NHS which discusses the different types of subjects which fall under the Raising a Concern policy.

Our raising concerns policy detailing the process of dealing with a concern can be found on the intranet under “policies”.

With a new variant of COVID spreading in England, now is a good time to ensure all staff are aware of our current guidelines.

If you have symptoms (including but not limited to: a new continuous cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle ache, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell) you should test.

If you test positive, you can return to work after five days if you feel well and do not have a temperature – you do not need to test again or wait for a negative test result. Day One is the first day you tested positive.

If you feel well enough and have agreed with your line manager, you may work from home during this time, but this will depend on your job role.

COVID boosters are available to frontline care-delivering staff and everyone is encouraged to take this up.

Our staff flu vaccine service will also return for this year and will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Hi all,

Today (Wednesday 13th September) is World Sepsis Day and is a global day of awareness and fundraising to fight a devastating condition that accounts for 11 million deaths worldwide each year. Public knowledge still has a long way to go – as one in five people haven’t heard of sepsis – and one in three would not treat sepsis as a medical emergency. Timely intervention is crucial, because it is often treatable if caught early. So it is important to inform yourself with potentially life-saving information…

Awareness really can saves lives. To get started, please take a few minutes to complete my Sepsis Quiz, to test your newly-acquired knowledge or you may have seen my QR code on the September newsletter which you can scan to access the sepsis quiz using your phone device.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak to the sepsis champions here at Derian House

Our Housekeeping Team, aka the Pink Ladies, are the unsung heroes of the hospice, ensuring that all of our areas are constantly spotless and sparkling! ✨

On #HousekeepingAppreciationWeek, we’d like to thank them for their hard work – without them, viruses would spread and our facilities wouldn’t be safe for the children and young people in our care 💚

To Nic, Mags, Lynn, Alison and Pam – we appreciate you so much! 🥰

Hello everyone,

I am delighted to be able to share with you all that we have appointed Catherine Randall to the Director of Clinical Services position (designate initially).  Catherine has this morning formally accepted the position and is absolutely delighted to be joining the team, she is looking forward to starting the role in September.

I am personally really happy with the appointment, Catherine has a wealth of experience within the health system, locally regionally and nationally, and will ensure that Derian remains at the forefront of children’s palliative care, building on the great work so far.  Her relationships within the commissioning world are going to be extremely valuable, alongside her 37yr nursing background.  After a very strategic role as the national lead for safeguarding with NHSE, she is looking forward to getting directly involved in leading our clinical practice and working with myself and the whole team in shaping services going forward.

Catherine’s start date is yet to be confirmed but it is hoped that she will attend the away day on the 4th September.

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported the process.  Catherine was very complimentary of everyone she met and commented how impressed she was with our robust assessment processes (I don’t think she had ever been put through her paces in this way!!)

As always, if you have any questions please give me a shout.

Have as great weekend

Best wishes

S.O.S……… we need your help!

Our shops urgently need volunteers. Do you know someone who fancies themselves as a stylist or a personal shopper? Does your bestie have a passion for pre-loved shopping or a family member who knows their high street fashion from a designer label – then this is the prefect role for them.

We have five charity shops – Chorley, Horwich, Blackburn, Preston and Leigh who all desperately need volunteers to organise stock, create window displays to providing a friendly welcome to customers.

Volunteers are being asked to commit as little as one morning or afternoon per week and in return we will provide a free lunch, travel expenses and in store discount.

Details of the roles and our online application can be found on our website or you can get in touch with Fran our Volunteer Services Coordinator in the hospice.

Please help us spread the word by sharing with all your friends and family!

Hello all,

Just a couple of polite notices around the fleet cars:

Parking

We all know the car park can get extremely busy and it can be difficult to get a space, however, there has been an increasing amount of fleet cars left in unsuitable places. If you return from your journey and there is nowhere appropriate to park we will ask you to check for available spaces later on in the day and move the car into a bay before you finish your shift.

This is especially important for the electric cars as they need to be charged properly overnight for use the next day. Our estates team are happy to help us where possible, but given they leave at 4pm, it is inevitable that some cars will need to be moved after this time. It will be the responsibility of the person having last used the car to ensure it is left in a convenient space.

Cancelling a Car

If you need to cancel your car booking please email the fleet email address. This ensures it is removed from the calender and the space can then be offered to those on the waiting list. If you “decline” your invitation this does not notify us and the booking remains in the car calender.

Your cooperation with this is much appreciated J

Hi All,

Next month is September which is Sepsis Awareness Month.

Sepsis is a medical emergency and its symptoms must be treated rapidly to reduce the risk of death. As part of Sepsis Awareness Month and as part of my champion role I am encouraging everyone to learn the signs of sepsis. As many as 80% of sepsis deaths could be prevented with early detection and treatment.

If everyone could please take the time to learn the signs. You could save a life.

Please look out for the posters and other educational materials including toolkits I have distributed about the hospice.

I will be sending out a quiz in September for everyone to take part in to help raise the awareness of sepsis. If anyone has any questions or wants any more information around sepsis please feel free to speak with me or send me an email.

Kind Regards,

It is with regret that we announce that Steve Game is to step down from his role of Trustee at Derian House.

Steve has served on the board of trustees since 2018 and as co-chairperson of our Quality, Safety and Improvement sub-committee.

His relationship with Derian House began even earlier, having worked as a volunteer on reception since 2016.

Karen Swindley, Chair of the Board of Trustees, thanked Steve for his contribution.

She said: “Steve has been an outstanding and exemplary trustee who significantly contributed to us achieving our last CQC rating and I would personally like to place my sincere thanks to him on record.  We have been fortunate to have him on the board. I am sure you would all join me in wishing him the very best for the future.”

It’s that time of year again when we ask you to complete Birdsong – our annual Employee Engagement survey.

The survey is an important way for us to hear about your experience in being part of Derian House. From your feedback we will know more about the areas where we are doing well and the areas we could improve on.

This is an opportunity for you to provide honest, anonymous feedback on all aspects of working at Derian House – both positive and negative.

The survey is managed independently by Hospice UK.

Please find the link to the survey which closes on Friday 16th June.

Good Afternoon,

We are holding a Team Day this Thursday for all the Care Team Staff which I appreciate may have an impact on parking availability within the hospice. Ann Marie and Mick have kindly managed to negotiate some extra parking at TCs Bar/ Rugby Club for the day. There is a gate which has a code access but we will ensure this is opened ready for staff. The team day commences at 0830 so the car park may or may not be full on your arrival. If it is full, please access the parking across the road. I have attached the picture Mick has kindly sent with the location on. It is the opposite side of the road to Derian next to the Chancery Fields Estate.

There may be option for you to work from home to reduce parking issues, however this would need to be agreed with your line manager.

For your info, this is where the parking is – TC Sports bar is on the left of the picture and we are on the right.

Thank you for you cooperation with this, it is much appreciated!

Any questions/ concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thanks Again,

Hello Team Derian

I just wanted to share some news about planned changes that will be happening within the leadership of our senior care team at the hospice over the next few months.

Lynn Grayson, our Director of Clinical Services, will be retiring next May, 2024, after 38 years of service in children’s nursing.

Our trustees and I are keen for Lynn to have a thorough handover period with her successor, to ensure a seamless transition and the continuation of outstanding care, and so we will be starting the recruitment process in the coming weeks.

Lynn will gradually hand over the day-to-day elements of her role, giving her the time to concentrate on ensuring our position as an equal partner with NHS services as we move forward in the provision of specialist palliative care for the region.

Lynn will also be a key support for me, leading strategically our funding negotiations with the NHS and continuing to represent Derian as Chair and Clinical Lead for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Children’s and Young People’s Palliative and End of Life Care Network.

We still have Lynn for more than a year yet, which gives us plenty of time to arrange lots of celebrations when the time comes.

Best wishes

What a bloomin’ marvellous time we had at #FLOWERFEST on Sunday, as we threw open our garden gates once again to allow Derian House families and supporters the chance to have a glance at the phenomenal facilities we have here at the hospice 🤩

From bubble art to floral headbands, and Morris dancing to glitter art, it was certainly a day to remember as we celebrated our first National Garden Scheme event of the year ✨
Events like these are vital in not raising just money, but awareness for our charity within the local community.
For many families and future referrals, it can be a stepping stone in letting them get a warm and welcoming feel of Derian House, and the feedback we’ve had has been wonderful.
For our supporters, it’s a chance for them to see just exactly what their money is being spent on, and to discover for themselves what a truly heart-warming place their local children’s hospice is.

Watch on for a roundup of all the action below, and jot down Sunday 13th August into your diaries ready for Open Gardens: Heroes… 🦸

Hello,

Paper P60s have been generated by Moorepay for all staff who joined us before we changed over to electronic payslips.

If you have not received a paper copy of your P60 from your line manager then you can access this on your Moorepay account under payslips/P60/2022

If you have problems accessing your Moorepay account then please try the forgotten password link in the first instance.  (your user name is your Derian email address)  Failing that please email Janet (janet.freeman@derianhouse.co.uk).

Link for Moorepay is:

0 calories, 💯% care ✨

Will you help us celebrate Derian’s 30th birthday and buy a virtual slice of birthday cake for just a £1 donation? 🍰

Adding a slice next time you’re shopping in any six of our stores will help us to continue to care for more than 400 babies, children and young people from across the North West 💚

A huge thanks to all of our shop teams who’ve collectively raised almost £600 in virtual cake in just one month – and a special shoutout to Chorley, who’ve raised the most at £160.

Hey all, hope you had a good Easter?

Chorley Theatre have kindly donated 10 x tickets for staff to see comedian Justin Moorhouse at Chorley Theatre on Sunday the 23rd of April at 8pm. We will offer them on a solo first come first served basis, however if there is a huge request for them we will instead pick names from a hat (please note, this will be done in line with all Gambling Commission guidelines.. haha). If you are interested please let me know by 9am on Friday the 14th of April. We will then let people know if they have been successful by the following Monday. J

Kind regards,
